Fall Schedule

Registration for Cycle I begins on August 30, 2019.  Cycle I courses run from Monday, September 23 through Friday, February 6, 2020, except where noted.

The Schedule for Cycle 2 classes will be posted December 20, 2019.

Monday

  • Dynamo Girl Sports for 4/5s-5/6s:
    Dynamo Girl teaches girls fundamental sports skills in a fun and joyful environment.
    At Dynamo Girl, girls are introduced to sports like: flag football, basketball, soccer and volleyball as well as deepening their speed, strength and agility through obstacle courses and games. Our curriculum also provides the girls, individually and as a group, many opportunities for building teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. Any child who identifies as a girl is welcome to participate. Dynamo Girl makes your daughter stronger inside and out! This course will happen in the CDR and will run for the entire cycle.

  • Golf for 4/5s-6/7s with Kate Tempesta’s Urban Golf Academy:
    KTUGA’s mission is to bring golf to urban environments and to share this wonderfully beneficial sport with children, both on and off the golf course. Their dynamic methods include combining a variety of child-friendly, modified equipment with traditional equipment in a mixture of fun, creative golf drills and games. Players will learn and practice the four basic shots as well as the rules and etiquette of golf. They work in both indoor and outdoor settings and create various stations that act as our golf course. The KTUGA program not only promotes physical literacy needed in any sport but also ensures that each child is actively engaged and having fun. By the end of this program, children will possess the skills and enthusiasm necessary to advance into this game of a lifetime.

  • Super Science for 5/6s & Up with Dazzling Discoveries:
    Science is all around us! Children will uncover science hidden in their day-to-day world as they explore rainbows, wheels, gravity, natural disasters, air pressure, sound, water, outer space, and other topics from our visible environment. Join the fun! Returning students can rest assured that all activities in Cycle II will be new.

  • Chess I for 6/7s & Up with Hex & Co:
    Developing minds learn how pieces move and how to organize approach and defense in this introduction to chess and related abstract strategy games. No experience is necessary and time is dedicated to learning these games in small group play. Each class is spent playing both chess and games like Ynch, Dvonn, Punct, Hive and Othello.

  • Dribbl for 7/8s & Up with Dalton Coaches:
    Since 1995, Dribbl has been teaching kids of all ages the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and safe environment. We like to focus on things like teamwork and sportsmanship rather than points and trophies. That said, we want our young athletes to walk away knowing how to handle the ball. So we hire the most passionate, talented coaches the City has to offer … we make sure they’re real nice, too.

  • Musical Theater Builders for 8/9s & Up with Creative Stage:
    Students will work over the semester to collaboratively devise an original theater piece, complete with music and dance components, as well as simple props and costume elements. Rehearsals and the final performance will be accompanied by conservatory trained musicians. The program culminates in a final performance for family and friends.

  • Private Voice Lessons for 10/11s & Up with Sammy Mellman:
    These classes will focus on strengthening the voice through warm-ups, breathing, and singing songs. Students will pick a handful of tunes from which to work to expand their range, style, and musical tastes.

  • Quick Start Tennis for 4/5s & 5/6s and 6/7s-8/9s:
    Children will learn basic strokes easily because the equipment and the court are age- and size-appropriate; they have more fun playing games and doing drills when they can experience success. Young players feel what it’s like to “play tennis” and will easily progress to play, lessons, and competition on full-size courts.

  • Around the World Cooking for 5/6s & Up with Taste Buds Kitchen:
    Calling all chefs from across the globe! We’ve got your passport ready. Taste Buds Kitchen presents a weekly culinary adventure taking your palate on a world tour. From chopping up fresh veggies in Japan, to whipping up a mousse in France and mashing cardamom in India, this hands-on class will set you up to be a future top chef. Pack up your adventure bags and let’s get cooking! Aprons and a custom recipe book are included for all chefs.

  • Abracadabra! It's Magic! for 5/6s & Up with Cassandra Nemser:
    Every week Cassandra Nemser will teach magical feats that will help students astound their friends and family! Junior magicians will learn amazing card and sleight-of-hand tricks as well as mind-reading and secret codes. Everyone will experience how much fun it is to do the impossible! Through fun magic lessons, students will hone their dexterity, public speaking, problem-solving, spelling, and math skills. At the end of the program, these enthusiastic magicians will have a chance to perform for families and special guests. Returning students can rest assured that Cassy and Mike will return with all new tricks up their sleeves.

  • Introduction to Bollywood Dance for 6/7s-Up with Joi Jackson:
    Bollywood Dance is a mix of dance styles performed in Bollywood films, including traditional Indian styles of Bharatanatyam, Kathak, folk styles, and modern jazz, hip-hop or belly dance. Jazz gives a dancer form and style while Bollywood allows you to experience and open up the body in a fun way.

  • Chess II for 7/8s & Up with Hex & Co:
    After learning piece movement and basic rules in Chess 1, this class is aimed at improving strategic thinking and seeing that planning in chess begins as early as move one. Designed for students who understand the basics of chess tactics and strategy, we will emphasize more advanced strategy, classic openings and closings.

    Level 1 is for beginners with no experience. In the first year, children learn Em, E, D, A7, G, and C chords, and four strumming variations for the right hand while accompanying themselves singing. This study can also lead to the electric guitar. Students who feel ready will have the option to share what they have learned during our After School Recitals in either February or late May.     Juventus aims to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Their philosophy is to nurture, build self-confidence, and develop teamwork while focusing on conditioning and the basic fundamentals of dribbling, passing, defending, and shooting in every class. The Juventus curriculum uses positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio to ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having endless fun.

  • Inventors Workshop for 7/8s and Up with Dazzling Discoveries:
    Think it, design it, build it! Learn planning, design and engineering skills while making your own games, toys and inventions. Explore and create using everything from paper & cardboard to lights and motors. Based on STEM principles of science, engineering, technology and math, kids will invent, make and take home their special projects. All materials provided. NEW PROJECTS EVERY TERM. Some projects may take more than one week to complete.

  • Animal Exploration for 5/6s - 7/8s with Art Farm in the City:
    for 5/6s-7/8s with Art Farm in the City: Young naturalists will have the opportunity to discover how to be kind, gentle and respectful towards animals and the environment in this unique program. Each session includes up-close encounters with live animal guests such as chinchillas, rabbits, frogs, lizards, turtles, doves, parrots and crabs! These hands-on experiences will help students formulate questions and sharpen science classifications skills. Students will experience the wonders of nature right in their classroom as they discover ways to properly care for pets, learn the techniques field biologists use to study animals in the wild and use scientific tools to examine x-rays, animal skulls, feathers and eggs!

    In this diverse multi-sport program, each week children will be introduced to a different sport, learn new skills, and then separate into teams to play a game. Sports include baseball, football, floor hockey, and more. Students will also play Ultimate Frisbee, Power Ball, and other great games to keep them involved in a world of movement, variety, and fun. Coaches are all trained, kid-friendly athletes who focus on sportsmanship and team-building.

  • Functional Clay for 6/7s & Up with Raquel Muslin:
    Time to build some functional clay. Students 6/7 and up will be learning different clay techniques such as coils, pinch pots and slabs. These techniques will be used to build sets of cups, bowls, plates and many other functional sculptures. Each student will be able to choose 3 clay pieces to be fired and glazed for use at home. Our amazing teacher Raquel has taught in both the School for Children and After School programs in the past and will be returning by popular demand to teach this class in our art room.

    Gear up for weekly Central Park EDventures, including elements of fort building, back-country survival, and wilderness hide-and-seek, plus an original variety of awesome outdoor games and activities.   • Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance! for 6/7s & UP with TADA!
    A class that builds musical theater skills and focuses on the core elements of singing, acting, and dancing. Kids learn popular songs from Broadway and one-of-a-kind songs from TADA!’s original musicals. The class explores character development using theater games, as well as song-and-dance numbers, to prepare kids for musical theater camps, classes, and productions. Classes begin with physical and vocal warm-ups to help students focus and prepare. The last class culminates in a final sharing that showcases high-quality performances of the skills learned in class.

    In this course, beginners will learn focus, respect, self-defense, decision-making, teamwork, coordination, self-discipline, and strong self-esteem alongside returning Blue Belts who will continue to hone their skills.

    A $60 equipment fee for gis, belts, and patches can be paid to Sensei Karin as needed.
    There will be a $70 promotion fee payable to Sensei Karin toward the end of the year. Children will share their skills with families in a promotion ceremony during part of the last day of class.

  • Advanced Blue Belt Seido Karate for 8/9s & Up with Karin Ferber-Hillman:
    Continuing students will further their work on focus, respect, self-defense, decision-making, teamwork, coordination, self-discipline, and strong self-esteem.

    Class runs from 3:20 to 4:30 PM

    Registrants are given placement on a first come, first served basis. All lessons are listed as “WAIT LIST ONLY” to avoid double booking a given time slot. Shortly after registration, we will contact you to discuss available slots. Until you have received confirmation about your specific time slot and you are taken off the wait list you will not be charged for the class.
